Cohosh Intrinsic 114
Black cohosh, either on its own or as a causal chain combination remedy, has been used for many centuries (a favorite of the Eclectics), for treating female hormonal imbalances, decreased sexual energy and especially for relieving PMS symptoms. Today, in Germany, black cohosh is covered by a positive monograph of the German Commission E, indicating that it has been evaluated for safety and efficacy as an herb for licensed medical prescribing in the country of Germany.
Research reports that the herbs in this elegant combination have activities of estrogen-like action and are capable of binding to estrogen receptors. Research has also found that black cohosh focalized remedies produce an effect on serum concentrations of pituitary hormone levels, including a significant and selective reduction of luteinizing hormone (LH), while not significantly effecting levels of prolactin and follicle stimulating hormone (FSH).
Estrogen levels are monitored by the hypothalamus. As estrogen levels increase during the normal menstrual cycle, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary to reduce production of FSH. Once the hormone levels indicate that the follicles are mature, the hypothalamus signals the pituitary to release a surge of LH. The spike in LH levels triggers ovulation approximately 36 hours after the surge.
The ovaries begin to produce progesterone, which also support the development of the endometrium. If pregnancy does not occur, the lining of the endometrium breaks down and is released during menstruation. Rising levels of human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) produced by the placenta, are an indication of pregnancy. Reduced production of estrogen may lead to the breakdown of the regulation of the reproductive cycle, potentially resulting in irregular menstruation or infertility.
Low estrogen levels can also effect breast development, as the chemical signals from the pituitary gland are not effectively communicated through the steroidal tree without sufficient estrogen (HPA). These chemical signals normally orchestrate powerful changes in a developing woman’s body, with breast tissue growth occurring most efficiently with the balanced presence of human growth factor hormones. Improper imbalances of these hormones lead to poor breast development.
Estrogen also plays a significant role in women’s libido and mental health. Research comparing the activity of endogenous, bio-identical and synthetic estrogen with mood, libido and well-being, has found that sudden estrogen withdrawal, fluctuating estrogen, and periods of sustained low levels of estrogen correlate with significant mood lowering and reduction in sexual energy. Clinical recovery from post-partum depression, or depression related with peri and post-menopause was shown to be effective after levels of estrogen were stabilized and/or restored.
