In times of stress, the sympathetic nervous system is stimulated to produce what is commonly known as the “fight or flight” response, allowing the body to arm itself to face a perceived danger. Upon activation of the stress response, epinephrine is secreted from the adrenal medulla and ACTH is released via the hypothalamus-pituitary axis, resulting in an increase in the production of the stress hormone cortisol, from the adrenal cortex. The regulation of hormone production is tightly regulated by a negative feedback mechanism. During prolonged or chronic stress however, excess cortisol blunts this negative feedback response. Since cortisol is involved in many survival functions, the body interprets excess cortisol levels as a sign of impending danger and allows cortisol levels to continue to rise. Cortisol levels may spike during times of stress to such a high degree that the adrenal glands eventually become exhausted, resulting in a subsequent decline in cortisol output. Simultaneously, the adrenal hormone DHEA begins to decrease (without spiking, as in the case with cortisol). Chronic stress results in a de-compensation of DHEA with concurrent rise of cortisol. A common error that many new or unenlightened practitioners make relates to the attempt to detoxify or correct an under-functioning gland before it is capable of moving through the pathways of restoration. While the patient may for the moment feel better and energetic testing such as EAV/EDS, Applied Kinesiology, Bio-resonance, etc. may indicate balance, this is in fact a not her case of “Cloaked Disturbances”. Patients won’t BE better, they’ll just feel better!
No where is this statement more applicable than in cases of adrenal insufficiency. The adrenal glands, supportive glands and organs and systems must be drained AND tonified to yield lasting and safe results.
