Description
Gynostemma pentaphyllum (Jiaogulan) extract is a daily adaptogenic anti-aging support and Chinese immortality botanical.*
The highly concentrated Gynostemma powdered extract is made from the purest, highest grade, wildcrafted Gynostemma. It is grown totally on mountain spring water and natural precipitation.
The primary active constituents of Gynostemma are known as gypenosides. Gynostemma contains over 100 naturally occurring gypenosides. Tsunematsu Takemoto reported that Jiaogulan (the Chinese name for Gynostemma) contains four identical saponins in Panax ginseng and 17 similar saponins. Over the next decade, 82 saponins (gypenosides) were identified in Jiaogulan, compared to the 28 (ginsenosides) found in Panax ginseng. There are 3-4 times as many saponins in Jiaogulan as there are in ginseng. This more significant number of gypenosides may account for a more robust regulatory effect on many body systems, like blood pressure, the reproductive system, the digestive system, the immune system, mental functions, blood sugars, and more.
The active constituents are indicated for anti-inflammation, detoxification, a cough remedy, an expectorant, and a chronic bronchitis remedy. Other traditional uses as a medicine have been for heart palpitation and fatigue syndromes. Gynostemma, in particular, is known in Asia to have a strong anti-inflammatory effect, helping to reduce low-grade, sub-clinical, chronic inflammation.
This herb is also highly valued for youthfulness and longevity. It is now well understood that a compound in the gypenosides fragment may be an inducer of p53, a tumor suppressor gene, as the downstream events and transcriptions associated with p53 activity have been noted repeatedly.
Most of its benefits are beyond the diabetic effects, which are mediated by a possible mix of AMPK activation and PTP1B inhibition (protein tyrosine phosphatase 1B). PTP1B has been suggested as a specific target to improve insulin sensitivity in different cell types, inducing antioxidant enzymes and protecting cells from oxidative damage over time.
