Thyro Tox
Homeopathic relief for thyroid challenges
Thyroid Expert, Dr. Broda Barnes, MD, estimated that approximately 40% of the North American adult population suffers from undiagnosed hypothyroidism. Subnormal thyroid function appears to be a risk for a plethora of conditions ranging from fibromyalgia, to chronic constipation to heart disease and Cancer.
Many individuals are unable to convert the inactive thyroid hormone, T4, into the active thyroid hormone, T3. In his book ‘Overcoming Thyroid Disorders’, Dr. David Brownstein lists over 30 items that inhibit this conversion, including commonly used drugs such as beta-blockers, birth control pills, estrogens and lithium. Additional factors include advancing age, chronic illness, EMF’s, hypoadrenal states, vitamin and mineral deficiencies, heavy metal toxicity and foods such as soy. A decrease in the levels of circulating T4 is responsible for the development of hypothyroidism. Individuals with thyroid hormone resistance, similar to insulin resistance in diabetics, may require larger amounts of thyroid hormone to overcome the cellular resistance to thyroid hormone. When hormone resistance is present, medical measurements of TSH cannot accurately predict what is happening in the body.
Autoimmune thyroiditis (Hashimoto’s) is the most common cause of underactive thyroid. In this condition, the immune system attacks the thyroid gland and interferes with the action of thyroid hormones in the body. Thyroid autoimmunity affects 1 in 4 women. Environmental toxins and widespread vitamin D deficiency are the main culprits in the development of these conditions. Wheat gluten has been shown to be a trigger for Hashimoto’s. Selenium deficiency, a serious problem due to low soil levels of this mineral. Selenium deficiency results in the suppression of the conversion of T4 to T3.
Additional factors affecting thyroid function:
- Estrogen dominance, caused by stress and pollution (xenoestrogens/estrogen mimicking compounds): Suppresses thyroid function. Soy isoflavones, often identified as beneficial, have been identified as the goitrogenic component of soy. Genetic modification of soybeans to increase their tolerance to large doses of herbicides (i.e. Round-up) further contributes to the xenoestrogenic load. (Consider combining with product, GPS-TOX!) This is not to say that all soy is bad, particularly if consumed in moderation and not in the presence of thyroid conditions.
- Pesticides (i.e. perchlorate): Can inhibit the thyroid’s ability absorb iodine from the bloodstream. Perchlorate contamination has been found in nation’s drinking water supply, in fruits, vegetables and grains irrigated with perchlorate-contaminated water and milk products from cows that grazed on contaminated grasses.
- Fluoride: Causes hypothyroidism, poisons over 100 enzymes in the body and causes seizures, bone disease, Cancer and premature aging.
- Thyocyanide: An ingredient found in cigarette smoke, thyocyanide strongly inhibits the thyroid.
- B6 deficiency reduces the thyroid’s ability to convert iodine into thyroid hormone.
- The coxsackie virus: This virus, among many others, targets the thyroid and heart. Adrenal insufficiency must always be ruled out in any thyroid condition!
- Mercury (dental, vaccination, food, etc.), bromine, chlorine, radiation and other toxins and their derivatives: blocks the enzyme peroxidise and suppresses the conversion of T4 to T3 in the liver. Both the thyroid and pituitary have an affinity for accumulating mercury.
